Build an arcade cabinet - general design
Written by Steve on Wednesday, January 2, 2019

Before you choose your design, look on the internet at cabinets other people have made. Most people make either a bartop or full size cabinet. I chose a bartop which needs to sit on a desk, table or bar to get the controls to the correct height. I don't have the space to have a full size cabinet but they look great. They are also very heavy. Obviously, back when arcade cabinets were first made, the cabinets needed to be big to accommodate the large CRT screens and the electronics. These days a full size cabinet can be a waste of space although some people have innovative solutions like having the lower section as a fridge or other storage.

Designs don't need to be limited to bartop and full size cabinets. Table cabinets (which were very popular in pubs in the 70s and 80s) or portable cabinets can be made. If you don't have much space, it's possible to make the control panel to give the arcade feel and then plug it into a laptop or single board computer.

I chose a design for a bartop cabinet which looked 'old school', i.e. looks like it could house a big CRT screen rather than the flat screen it actually houses. You can actually make a lighter cabinet if you design it around a flat screen.
